Abstract: This study investigated the relation between the Psychiatric Hospital – Instituto de Psiquiatria de Santa Catarina, and its surrounding community. The main objective was to identify the social representations that the subjects who live near the hospital have about this institution and the concept of madness. The method consisted of selecting a random sample of ten female neighbors, with whom were conducted structured interviews that were submit to a content analysis. The interviews revealed a social representation of the hospital as a place for treatment, where patients are kept only because their relatives do not care about them. In this sense, we may suggest that the explanations given about the concept of madness in this community may be characterized by a biological understanding of the phenomenon. In addition, the responses indicate that the population is not concerned about living near the hospital or with the patients who circulate in the neighborhood, because the patients who are known, do not frighten the neighbors.
