The article then highlights the history of family approaches, which had their origins in psychoanalysis. The principal concepts are reviewed such as: the identified patient; the systemic notion that the “whole” is as important as the “parts”; the idea of a dual link; family borders and family hierarchy, among others. Some of the pioneer family therapists in this clinical practice from the mid 20th century in the United States will also be reviewed along with their contributions. The paper shows how the two approaches are contextualized and co-related to each other and analyzes the links between the two, and their similarities and differences, allowing a deeper understanding of the theme.

Key-words: Clinical Psychology.
